Sinds het verschijnen van Worst Case Scenario van dEUS, al gauw zo’n dertien jaar oud alweer, worden we ieder jaar overspoeld met alternatieve Belgische bandjes die telkens weer lovende recensies kregen, maar waarvan slechts weinigen blijvertjes bleken. Nu gebiedt de eerlijkheid mij te zeggen dat ik ook maar weinig heb met het soort artistiekerigheid dat dergelijke bandjes vaak ten toon spreiden. En nu is daar dan Dez Mona met Moments Of Dejection Or Despondency. Zowel bandnaam als titel voorspelt weinig goeds, maar schijn bedriegt. Goed, artistiekeriger dan de muziek die Gregory Frateur hier brengt, kan het haast niet, maar waar dat meestal blijft steken in pretenties, klinkt Dez Mona wel geloofwaardig. Frateur’s sterkste wapen is zonder twijfel zijn verbluffende stem die een enorm bereik heeft en die sommige mensen wellicht zal afstoten, maar veel andere juist zal betoveren. Muzikaal zit Dez Mona een beetje in dezelfde hoek als Antony van Antony & The Johnsons, maar ook Tom Waits, Gavin Friday en Pavlov’s Dog kunnen als vergelijkingsmateriaal dienen. Als er dit jaar één echt goede plaat uit België komt, dan is het deze.
